Geographic Information System (GIS) - Monster Class

with Andrew Watson

$49

The nights are getting longer, the air becomes crisper and it’s a spooky season…is there a noise? No! Is it something that streaked past me? No! Is it just my imagination or could these groans be zombies? That can’t be right! Why are people running away? Can Godzilla be attacking us? Each night the mist is coming closer and covering the roads… Are Krakens and other deep sea creatures coming to destroy vessels like a puppy chewing on a lace? I shiver with goosebumps as I look around and listen.

Halloween is upon us and what better way to get into the SPOOKYspirit than to map zombie hordes and how fast they could attack?! And what would it look like if a monster like Godzilla attacked Maine?! And what if Krakens were sinking ships just outside Rockland?!

Maps are a lot of things: they can help with wayfinding, they can tell stories, or they can just be fun!  Map making techniques can be used for real world situations OR to track the many pairs of red eyes staring at you from the woods…If you ever wanted to know more about maps or learn how to make them using free, open source software, and free and easily accessed data, then the GIS Monster Class is for you! Come enjoy the creepy crawlies, the unknown, and the cautionary bedtime stories that made you stay up as a kid all in the context of learning real digital mapmaking skills.

Students need to bring a laptop (a PC or MacBook), a storage device is recommended, and a smartphone is helpful as a data collector.
